Through more than 40 years of efforts on the spirit of self-reliance, hardship-bearing and hard-working for the prospertiy and heights-scaling, this hospital and affiliated institute, headed by Prof. WU Mengchao ,has been growing up from a 3-member research group in the field of hepatobiliary surgery started in 1958 to a department, then an institute

and now a combination of hopital and research institute which embodies medicare, education and scientific research. By the end of 1999, 8,464 hepatectomies had been successfully performed in this hospital.

Since 1989, the hospital and institute has been entitled as the national key discipline, the PLA institute of hepatobiliary surgery,the national operning-up laboratory,the postdoctoral mobile station,and the key discipline of leading medical specialty of Shanghai.

In Mar.1993.Mr.JIANG Zeming, the CPC Secretary-general and Chairman of the Central Military Committee inscribed the name of this hospital and institute in his own handwriting. It was entitled as the third affiliated hospital of the Second Military Medical University in 1999.

Now the hospital has an eighteen-floor major building with 460 beds, including 30 clinical departments and an eight-floor research building.
